The association was originally founded in 1999 in connection with a national meeting in emergency medicine in Uppsala. The association was initially associated with the Swedish Association of Internal Medicine with the intention of becoming an independent association within a few years to represent the specialty of emergency medicine. In connection with the annual meeting in 2002, it was decided to form the current association, the Swedish Society for emergency medicine (SWESEM) as an independent association for practitioners of emergency medicine.
The Society has been a member of the European Society for Emergency Medicine (EUSEM) since 2005 and of the global organization International Federation of Emergency Medicine (IFEM) since 2006.
SWESEM's main goal is to create conditions for increased quality and patient safety in Swedish emergency medicine . By creating national networks, we also strive to promote research, education and development in emergency medicine.
